Personal Work
A collection of props, costume and embroidery made as personal projects.
Ghost Costume
Made from cotton bedsheet, black mesh. machine sewn. A simple project - the bedsheet was cut in the places where it touched the ground, and the raw edges hemmed. Eye holes were cut out and the raw edges fixed with a zigzag stitch, and then black mask mesh was sewn in. A headband is attached on the inside to keep the costume from slipping off the head.
Prop Replica Hat - The 5000 Fingers of Dr. T
Made from polystyrene foam, felt, paint. The hand was carved and sanded from a block of polystyrene foam, which was then primed for painting with several layers of PVA. The hand was then spray painted, and spray varnished with a matt varnish. The cap was created by stretching felt, saturated with a roughly 1:4 PVA to water solution, over a custom-built head form made to fit my head. The wet felt was then pinned into place, and cut into shape once dry. The lettering was painted on with acrylic paint.
Images to the right show the hands and cap before completion. I had carved three replica hands, as I was gifting two to friends. The stick in the hand was used for ease of painting and was cut down prior to being hot glued onto the base of the hat. The lettering for the cap was stenciled in with heat erasable pens.
Embroidered Napkins
A series of napkins embroidered for a cousin's wedding, featuring lavender, magnolia, and elderflower.
Costume Replica Cape - Sky: Children of the Light
Made from cotton, satin, faux suede, curtain trim, fabric paint. Machine sewn from a self-altered cape pattern. An interesting project to complete as the cape comes from a video game and so lacks some details, which I was left to interpret when creating. To keep the cape in place, I sewed in Velcro straps which attach under each arm like a backpack. The curtain trim was doubled up to 2 layers to make sure it had no gaps, and to give the cape additional structure.
The image to the left provides a comparison to the cape as seen in-game, and the finished project. Progress images of the cape can be seen below. The white diamonds on the back were stenciled in with heat erasable pens, before being painted in using fabric paint and painters' tape.
Prop Replica Antennae - The Disastrous Life of Saiki K
Made from polystyrene foam, cocktail sticks, acrylic paint. The base and spheres were carved and sanded from polystyrene foam, then primed for painting with several layers of PVA.
Cocktail sticks were cut down to size and poked through each foam piece to form the stalk, and a piece of string was wrapped around the base of the stalk. They were then painted with colour-matched acrylic paint and sprayed with a glossy varnish. Hair clips were hot-glued to the bases.
Images to the left show the reference I was working from, and a step-by-step process of the project. the image above shows how the antennae look when worn.
Embroidered hat
Embroidered daisies and mushrooms, on a pre-manufactured baseball cap.
Alien Antennae
Made from wire, aluminum foil, hot glue. Wire forms the base shape of the antennae, and is hot-glued to a headband. This was then fleshed out with aluminium foil, and textured with a covering layer of hot glue. The stalks and headband were then spray painted in a two-tone ombre, and fitted with battery powered LED lights. The piece is heavy and designed to be clipped into place, underneath a covering headwear (as shown below).
Romper
Made for myself, machine sewn from a sewing pattern. Difficult components included gathered cap sleeves, back pleats, pockets, buttons and buttonholes. inside embroidered with my initials and date of creation.
Costume Replica Cape - Over the Garden Wall
Machine Sewn from cotton, following a sewing pattern. The image below is the reference for the cape, and the image to the left shows how it looks when worn.
Cardboard Camera
Made from cardboard, glue, string. Replica of a Goldixette 120 camera, created for an experimental short film. Measurements of the real camera were taken and then translated onto cardboard, where it was cut out and stuck together. The image below is a still from the short where it was used.
